ONLINE BOOKS: How to Read and Print

How to Read

online book
  1. The online book homepage looks like the picture above (I want that hot-hot car!). It is a common junction that leads to all the other books, bonuses and downloads. So you may want to bookmark that page.

  2. Click the button of the book you want to read.

  3. A sub menu will scroll down:
    • Read this book: General safety precautions. Press OK to enter the book.
    • Table of contents: Click to go directly into the list of chapters.
    • What's New (latest updates!): Highlights what's new in THIS book.
    • Go to my last Bookmark: Browser-dependent bookmark instructions.

  4. IMPORTANT: If clicking any of the buttons or options does not function as expected, you have a local problem. It's not our server blocking you; we have no blocks. You must do either of the following, depending on your computer skills:
    • Remove the blocks in your browser. Usually the problem is that Internet Explorer is blocking something called "Active-X Controls". Don't ask me what that is. Just remove the blocks to read this book. It could be some other security block, like pop-up blockers, etc. If you can't figure it out, skip to the next step:
    • Install Firefox (www.GetFirefox.com) and the problem should disappear. If the problem persists (very rare), you have too much security - contact your computer vendor to remove the blocks.

  5. Clicking into the Table of Contents option will open up the book internal navigation panel (same panel will also be displayed in all chapters):

    (a) Left Arrow - previous chapter.

    (b) Home Button - takes you back to the main menu for ALL books & downloads.

    (c) Chapters - displays the Table Of Contents of this book only.

    (d) Bookmark - lets you bookmark this chapter. Browser dependent.

    (e) Print - clicking it will print the chapter you're reading now.

    (f) Right Arrow - next chapter.

    (g) Automatic translation from English into the following languages: Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, Japanese, Chinese, Russian and German. Click a non-English flag to translate. Click the American flag to return to English. As stated in our Terms, we cannot guarantee or control translation quality. Translations are given as a free service of goodwill.

  6. At the bottom of the page you'll see two more arrows. Clicking the upward pointing arrow brings you right to the top of the chapter. The second arrow jumps to the next chapter.

  7. If you need technical assistance, you'll find a link to our Help Desk at the bottom of every chapter.

  8. ZOOM: in Firefox, and in later versions of Internet Explorer, it is possible to zoom in out of the page. To zoom any chapter or page, hold the Ctrl button while pressing [+] or [-] on the keyboard to zoom in and out. Zoom will usually stay for the next chapter you're reading. It does NOT change printing size, only display size. In Firefox, it changes only the text, while in Internet Explorer it affects all the graphics as well as text.

  9. EXTERNAL LINKS: When you're inside a chapter you can click an external link, for example a link to Napa website as shown below:
    online book
Clicking an external link means that you are taken out of the book BUT THE BOOK STAYS OPEN in the background. Depending on your browser, the external link may open in a new window - or separate tab. What is a tab? See picture below. When you have two tabs, you can switch back and forth between them. To get back to the book, don't close the window! It will close ALL tabs and you're out of the book. Either close only the second tab (by clicking the red X of the tab itself) or just click the book tab to continue reading.

  10. BOOKMARKS: You can bookmark any chapter you're reading. Clicking Ctrl+D will bring up the bookmark box shown below. It will automatically have the name of the book, and the chapter number. You can change its name or bookmark group, or just click OK.

Important to know that you are bookmarking the entire chapter! For instance in the example above, you were on step 16 of constructing the Electrolyzer. When you bring back the bookmark, it will open at the top of the chapter.

How to Print

  1. Each chapter prints individually. To save paper and color ink, we recommend that you print only the chapters that you need to take to the mechanic or to your workshop.

  2. Before printing any of the chapters, it is important to check how it is going to print. Unfortunately there is no worldwide standard; every browser and every printer is different. Therefore, use a "print preview" function: go to the File menu at the top of the window, then select the Print Preview option.

  3. The following preview screen OR SIMILAR (depending on your browser) will display:

  4. You can change the margins to fit your paper and also header/footer (like chapter name and page number) to your preferences.

  5. More importantly, change the scale - sometimes "shrink to fit" will give a perfect printing size. However I've seen cases that the text was too large to fit the printing area, and part of it was lost on the right-hand side. Test with different scale settings and print a page or two, in order to make sure it's ok.

  6. One solution to the text being cut is to change the page setup to "Landscape" printing. However in most cases it is possible to set it up nicely in "Portrait".

  7. Another useful function of the Print Preview is when you want to print a specific page (or page range), you can scroll through the preview and find to find out which page (or pages) has the information you wanted. Then, after clicking the Print button, you can select to print only the pages you wanted. That's another way of saving time, paper and ink.

How to Save to Your Hard Drive

  1. THE SIMPLE WAY: To save a page to your hard drive, do it as you would save any other website: go to "File" menu at the top of the window, then select "Save Page As". Important: make sure you save the complete page, which means all graphics will be in place. See example "Save As" window below; can look different in your computer, but it will always have the basic controls: where will the file be saved, under what name, and whether it has graphics or not.

  2. FOR ADVANCED COMPUTER SKILLS: You can download our books in their entirety. Which means you will have a copy of the two books with the homepage and all navigation, on your computer for reading offline. This can be done by using any website-download software. It is not a browser. It downloads whole complete structures off the Internet. Let me give you some pointers here, and if it gets too complicated just skip it, please. We will not support this function, as I said it's for advanced users only and NOT part of our book deal.

The screen shot below shows the main setup screen for a download software called "HTTrack Website Copier":

To get this software totally free, visit www.download.com and search for "website downloader". With the best editor's rating and more than a million downloads, "HTTrack Website Copier" is your best choice. Thanks to Xavier Roche and Yann Philippot who developed it. I've been using it for years and it gets the job done every time.

As I said we cannot support this software, however you can find extensive user guides at www.httrack.com/html/index.html
